Marika

Marika Michalowska – a young yet very talented DJ from Wroclaw, which is where she lives and studies Polish. She had the courage to stand up to acid techno, the style that ruled the local club scene, and chose to spin progressive.

Getting started was no easy feat for Marika. She worked hard at pubs and bars in Wroclaw waiting tables and washing mugs to make the money she needed to buy her first decks. After finally managing to save the required amount, she quickly started to learn the ins and outs of DJing. However, it turned out that nobody wanted to listen to her music in Wroclaw which is why Marika chose to take part in Heineken’s competition for young and talented DJs.

The frequenters of Poznan’s Eskulap, where the semi-finals took place, hailed Marika the best DJ of the party. A few weeks later she won the finals at Warsaw’s Focus and Paul Oakenfold said that “she has the kind of charisma that really works with the crowd and that’s a really important part of being a great DJ”. As a reward, Marika flew to Greece to play together with Oakenfold and Daniel Divoli. The crowd liked her very much and she was invited to take part in a big tour in Lebanon. Before that, she went to spin at a festival in Gdynia with stars like Kosheen, Layo&Bushwacka! and Cassius. August 2003 saw her playing at club and beach parties in Lebanon. Marika’s DJing skills and her energetic style where very much appreciated by Lebanon’s crowds which resulted in an invitation to participate in the next tour.

After her homecoming, it turned out that Marika was no longer an anonymous person in Poland. Nowadays, she plays at Warsaw's Piekarnia, Klatka and in many other clubs all over the country on a regular basis. She has also founded a booking agency – Progredior (www.progredior.pl) – known for promoting heavier, more progressive electronic music. Its first member was DJ Plan.

In September 2003, she was offered to record a DJ mix for Laif Magazine. The compilation was to promote not just herself but first and foremost, the music she loves – progressive. “The most important thing for me is to make people feel the music I play, tell them a story using melody and emotions – that’s why I work hard – I want to make my own productions and share them with the crowd”.

2004 was a time of frequent parties being held by Marika’s agency. Thanks to her, the clubbers in Wroclaw could take part in cozy parties with Angelo Mike, Fresh and an array of big Polish names. Marika herself can be heard these days at clubs all over Poland. She has also presented her one hour mix at Radiostacja, which is a Polish radio station. In May she was voted the second best DJ in Poland by the readers of Laif Magazine, which speaks volumes about the ever growing popularity of both Marika and progressive vibes in Poland.
