Basic Soul Unit

Producer/Promoter/Graphic Designer Stuart Li. Born in Hong Kong and based in Toronto. Early club music interest started in the late 80's listening to Toronto college radio stations playing house and hip hop. First taste of club scene in the early 90's during Toronto's Warehouse days with DJ's playing New York, Chicago and Detroit based house music. Working at Cosmo's Records (run by Movement crew's Aki) during the late 90's and diggin' into the crates lead interests into disco, jazz, soul, funk, latin, brasilian, etc. Started Djing various styles at various lounges, bars and clubs leading into current jazz/funk/latin/etc. monthly called "Foot Prints" with Jason Palma (Movement, Higer Ground) and General Eclectic at the Rivoli in Toronto (4th year and running!). Started producing in 2003 with first release "Basic Soul" as Basic Soul Unit moniker on Iwanai doing deep house and techno influenced by that early Chicago and Detroit sound with tinges of all the other aforementioned influences. Subsequently have released music on Do Right!, Left Of The Dial, Versatile and Compost. As Basic Soul Unit, DJ sets run more into house and tech territory; as DJ Stuart into the jazzier side of things but both do crossover at moments and sometimes all genres can be heard... Stuart is about to embark on heading the relaunch of the Do Right! sublabel Left Of The Dial with partner and DJ cohort Jason Ulrich. The label will focus on the more electronic and dancefloor spectrum of leftfield music.
