At first the name of this group may not tell you anything, but after explaining that it consists of Erol Alkan and Richard Norris, ignorance turns into interest. In brief, the first artist is the author very well known of remixes and mash-ups, while the other is one-half of the famous duo The Grid. So what did those electronic heads come up with? Suprisingly, nothing really electronic.
In our music circles when you hear “a remix of a rock or folk track“ you usually imagine a popular tune reinterpreted for dancefloor needs. In this case, though, we’re dealing with something different. The effect of Erol and Richard’s work sounds as if Midlake, Goldfrapp and others decided to change their producers and switch to Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve right before finishing their original albums. You don’t really feel you’re listening to remixes. They are more like alternative versions recorded together with the authors of the originals.
Moreover, these versions are in many cases better than their prototypes. You can easily fall in love with the expanded vision of ‘Roscoe‘, while ‘Come Hear The Trompets‘ has more juice than the original and ‘Battle Scars‘ was truly reanimated and now is living its new, more interesting life.
