The boss of the Mothership label, responsible for an album made by the familiar (to us) export duo – Catz’n’Dogz, has just released his new LP album. This CD is released by the second Claude VonStroke’s label – Dirty Bird. Impatiently expected new stuff entitled – ‘Bird Brain’.
Claude has strengthened his high position in the electronic music market by releasing some serious high quality tracks which shocked the minimal stage. One of his tracks ‘Who’s afraid of Detroit?’ was an international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the ‘best track of 2006’ in DJ magazine. The anticipation of his new LP was even bigger because of the rumors about Bootsy Collins as a guest star. He would be the perfect one to emphasize the tech-funk character of the new album.
Guess what, the rumors were true. Made a legend of the funk spice with his voice on a song named „The Greasy Beat”, which is also released on vinyl, Bootsy is setting the tone with his unique voice. The other thing is that he is making it to impose and that stays so apart of the subtly used vocals on the album.
Inviting Collins to collaborate seems to be the perfect move: demonstrating CVS’s philosophy on creating music. On this album there is a lot of same solidly made stuff by Claude VonStroke. Consequently, there are lot of freaked vocals and massive, deep samples. The author uses a live human voice just like music samples. There is still a long way to go to emulate Bobby McFerrin Band but CVS has put his own well heard signature to it. Live human voice samples sounds great in ‘California’ and ‘Vocal Chords’. There are also some down tempo sounding tracks on this CD such as smooth ‘Aundy’ and ‘Bay Arena’. The most tranquil is ‘Jasper’s Baby Robot’ closing the album. All the tracks form a coherent story.
Claude VonStroke is still in good form. The album is very skillfully made and that’s the thing that CVS gets us used to. Although there is no track with the potential to be as brilliant as ‘Who’s afraid of Detroit?’ stirring up such enthusiasm on the dance floor. One of the ‘Bird Brain’ album tracks – ‘Big’nRound’ seems to be similar to the biggest CVS smash-hit but there is no such power. So I’m counting about the other one: ‘Storm on Lake St. Claire’ will warm up some parties because of its truly stormy character.
