Official Press Release:

We are delighted to present ‘Eastward On To Mecca’, the Wagon Repair debut of
Deadbeat.

Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000,for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquée, Scape, and Spectral to name but a few.

His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry's leading publications and websites, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's own Mutek. Also a member of duo Crackhaus; whether crafting kaleidoscopic house and techno, snap-clap digital dancehall, or impossibly heavy dub, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

Taking a pretty traditional reggae approach to this EP, Deadbeat creates three different versions with the same elements, with the intention of trying to create something for a slightly different dancefloor context with each.

A1 ‘Mecca’ opens with sprinkler percussion and deep toms that focus into a strutted electronic beat, highlighted by murky horn blares and a dizzy synth climb. A melancholy hook shines amidst the bustle, growing in stature and influence to glorious climax. A2‘Mecca Drum Jack’ is a wholly percussive beast, as a tribal stomp is invited to jack and transport us from Benin to Berlin in an instant. B1 ‘Mecca Dub’ offers a deep and dreamy dub interpretation, with ghostly horns and pulsing synth dropping sharply on unsuspecting ears.
