G.Pal Interview

G.Pal

G.Pal, a Greek DJ and producer will be celebrating his birthday together with the Sound Revolt crew and the Polish clubbers. From the short interview you will know if he likes to go out, what’s his plans toward his daughter and how important musical education can be in a man’s life.

Sound Revolt: I will start from a thesis that there’s probably no fan of progressive in the whole world who doesn’t know about G.Pal. Your tracks have been used in many official and unofficial compilations. How did it all start? Who was the first who noticed artistry in your productions?
G.Pal: I believe it was my parents who had me get involved with music in the first place. Studying piano for almost 13 years was a big help in deciding what directions I would follow in my life. Composing since my first years while having piano classes, and by listening to electronic music compositions by giants like Jean Michel Jarre and our own Vangelis Papathanasiou, made me decide to follow a career in Electronic music production. I am still fascinated with music technology without ever forgetting my classical studies in Music.

Sound Revolt: Do you use anything of Jarre and Vangelis portfolio in your works? Where do you draw inspiration from today?
G.Pal: I always have these two composers in my mind, but concerning my productions I always think and listen to what I want to create. For instance if I want to accomplish a pumping tribal remix, I will try to put my self in a situation and mood of that same instance.

Sound Revolt: The tracks like “No Other Man”, “Ophra” or “Ocean of Blue” give prove that progressive can be very musical and full of expression. Or maybe your art goes beyond the boundaries of progressive?
G.Pal: I think that my art goes beyond progressive sound. As you know I have already released a full length album “George Pallikaris – Silk” on Germany’s down tempo label Elektrolux. My musical taste always lies in the more atmospheric – melodic sound!

Sound Revolt: Which of your productions do you consider to be cheerful?
G.Pal: Are you asking me this because probably you think that most of my production are melancholic?

Sound Revolt: I think they emanate with calmness and harmony. Are you also that kind of a man? The Greeks are known from their constant improvisation and a party nature, just like other south European countries.
G.Pal: I like to party only sometimes, but as a person I always preferred to stay in. While studying at New York University in New York, I preferred to stay at my apartment-studio, making music instead of going out and having fun with my friends. Still I spent many hours with my friends and co-students making new beats at my apartment. Now, mostly I spend time in the studio and in my house with my wife and daughter, and I only go out when I have to perform in a club.
