Interview with Benz & MD (part II)

...continuation of the article

Sound Revolt: Getting back to your charts. Don’t you think that top 30 is a bit to much? I think you’re missing a point of doing a chart.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) It’s tough. The reason I do 30 is just because I get so much music sent to me and there’s so much good stuff. I couldn’t constrain myself to 10.
(Marco) It’s true. Every week we hook up he literally spends an hour on playing me the “listen to this” tracks
(Greg) And I never stop buying records. I always get sent so much stuff in the mail but I go record shopping every week man. I can never get enough. I’m addicted.
(Marco) Yeah. It’s pretty bad.

Sound Revolt: I understand but it should be some kind of honour to be on someone’s chart.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) It’s true.

Sound Revolt: But your chart consists of vinyls not single tracks so there’s actually around 70 tunes every month! It’s like reading the Progressive-Sounds forthcoming releases page.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) Yeah, I know. It’s tough.

Sound Revolt: No, it’s not tough. I think you’re doing the easy way.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) I used to do a Top 20 almost every week but now I do a Top 30 once a month.

Sound Revolt: On our site we used to put Top 15, ‘cause your Top 30 would ruin our layout.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) That’s OK! That’s OK! (pretending he doesn’t mind – editor’s note)

Sound Revolt: If you can’t do it – someone’s gotta do it! (laughs)
Benz & MD II: (Greg) Yeah!

Sound Revolt: What about your future plans?
Benz & MD II: (Greg) We just got picked up by Lost Language. They signed two tracks (“Exhale” and “Visceral”) and we’re also gonna be doing two remixes.

Sound Revolt: So how many more tracks are there on you PC waiting to be signed.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) That’s it!
(Marco) These were the last ones.
(Greg) Now we’re doing a remix for Stefano Greppi’s Screen label.
(Marco) And we finished a remix of Jan Johnston – “Transparent” for Armada. That’s coming out very soon. “Tainted” and “Spiagia” is also out any minute. Fracas is releasing “Unconditional” and “Mar Del Plata” with an awesome Dousk remix. But there’s also 5 or 6 tracks more that we work on.
(Greg) Yeah, we just have to finish them off.
(Marco) For us writing original tracks flows naturally. In the span of year and a half we must have had like 20 original compositions that got signed. We do more originals than remixes.

Sound Revolt: Lucky you.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) Yeah.

Sound Revolt: But isn’t doing remixes more profitable?
Benz & MD II: (Marco) Yeah, it is.
(Greg) We’re gonna start releasing more originals on our own label.

Sound Revolt: How’s Aurium doing?
Benz & MD II: (Greg) Really well man. We got some great stuff coming out.
