Interview with Benz & MD (part II)

Benz & MD II

Let mortal combat begin...

Sound Revolt: OK, enough of the pleasant things. On your October chart is opened by Blue Haze – “Into Nothing”. Don’t you feel like Mick Burns’ vocal is the worst thing that could ever happen to the Bill Hamell’s remix?
Benz & MD II: (Greg) You know? Someone said that to us yesterday.

Sound Revolt: Cause it’s obvious! (laughs)
Benz & MD II: (Greg) But I like it.

Sound Revolt: The track itself is wicked and I love it but when the vocal comes...
Benz & MD II: (Greg) So maybe I shouldn’t be playing it tonight... (laughs)

Sound Revolt: You can use effects to echo it out or something.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) (laughs) I’m a big fan of Mick Burns’ stuff. He’s got another tune on Cuba with his vocal on.

Sound Revolt: Cardboard – “A Thought Of You”. That’s even worse.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) You don’t like that either? See, I like that record and I played it a lot.
(Marco) It’s tough with that kind of music. When you put a man’s vocal it’s a hit or miss. When we’re throwing a female’s vocal it always works

Sound Revolt: Oh no, no, no! You want some examples?
Benz & MD II: (laugh) (Greg) Exactly!
(Marco) Well yeah, we know some bad examples.

Sound Revolt: Marco – and what do you personally think about the vocal on “Into Nothing”?
Benz & MD II: (Marco) I don’t mind it. The first time I listened to it I was like: “OK, I could do without it” but the more I hear it the more I like it.

Sound Revolt: To be frank, that’s exactly what I confessed in a review for the magazine I write for. That I’m really ashamed for myself but after few listens I got used to the vocal and can’t live without it.
Benz & MD II: (Greg) See, it’s just a great record. Bill Hamel’s remix is excellent.
(Marco) I really love the Matthew Dekay’s remix of “See Me Fall”.
(Greg) That’s fucking awesome.

Sound Revolt: For me the melody is definitely to childish
Benz & MD II: (Marco) Well, I like it.
(Greg) Two tracks I was going to play tonight I’m gonna have to x off the list. (laugh)

Sound Revolt: (laughs) Don’t mind me! I can always go for a shot of vodka.
Benz & MD II: (Marco) You’ll probably love it after few shots off vodka.

Sound Revolt: Exactly. Tell me half an hour before you play it. Some friend would ask me “What are you doing Nermal?”. “Oh, I’m drinking to enjoy Greg Benz’s set”
Benz & MD II: (laugh) (Marco) That’s how you did so well last time!
(Greg) Yeah! Everyone got really hammered before they came.
