A very busy producer and an extremely active DJ. Together with fellow Turks they run the Red Flag Collective label and the Dinamo FM radio. That’s what most of our readers probably know. But only those who went to see them on Sound Temptation and Forbidden Habit parties know, how a remarkable duo they form behind the decks. Here’s what Barish and Goktug had to say few hours before their amazing performance in Warsaw. Sound Revolt: First of all – tell me more about Turkey. I know a lot about the producers and I know a lot about you but does your strength in making music have an impact on the clubs and the scene generally? Subsky & Barish Turker: Subsky – Well, two years ago it was much better, because of the hype and popularity. It was a trend, whereas now, only music lovers are following which is good in a way. There are some good clubs at the moment. Barish – There’s just one club that is very, very good. Subsky – Which is enough, actually.
Sound Revolt: What’s the name? Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – Crystal. We have Thursday nights there, which are called Together. Subsky – Actually, it’s a tech house club. Barish – But on Thursdays we do whatever: progressive, electro, techno. Subsky – So, we don’t have a solid progressive club but we’re still having parties and such so it’s alright.
Sound Revolt: And what’s the main city for the scene? Subsky & Barish Turker: Subsky – Ankara is quite powerful at the moment. They’re booking all the big progressive DJs. Barish – Yeah and upcoming producers every month or every two weeks.
Sound Revolt: I have a little distance towards the parties with upcoming producers. A kid releases two or three tracks and people think that he’s a good DJ without even hearing him spin. Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – That’s how it goes nowadays.
Sound Revolt: What’s Crystal’s capacity? Subsky & Barish Turker: Subsky – about 600. Plus a big lounge garden to hang out and find nice women. Barish – It’s a very classy place. Mazi – who’s a resident - thinks it’s one of the best clubs. Subsky – Yeah, among tech house DJs and producers it’s like a favourite place. Next month Terry Francis, Derrick Carter and Lee Burridge are playing. Barish – We’re really glad to have a night there.
Sound Revolt: And Dinamo FM. How’s the station doing? Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – We’re bringing John Digweed! Subsky – It’s been 1,5 year so far and we’re happy. We weren’t expecting so many good feedbacks and when you run radio you don’t expect something big from it.
Sound Revolt: On the contrary! That’s a big venture and I would try to make the best of it. But I realise it’s underground. Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – That’s a very underground radio – it doesn’t get commercial at all. Subsky – All of our alter egos are playing in that radio, you know? So it’s like a dream radio with 55 DJs working. Barish – So we play whatever we like and have been able to build a huge archive made only from our stuff.
Sound Revolt: And the commercial side. Do you have advertisements? Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – Yeah, of course.
Sound Revolt: So does the station support itself? Subsky & Barish Turker: Subsky – It’s in balance. Equalizing. At least we don’t loose money. It’s hard to recover the money for the investments but so far so good. Barish – It’s a passion thing.
Sound Revolt: And Red Flag? Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – So far so good. We’ve just had the third release with Muzo.
Sound Revolt: I know (laughs) Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – Yeah, you know all of them (laughs). Subsky – We’re getting ready for the fourth one, which will be Joshua Collins’ “World Keeps Turning” plus Espen & Elusive “Shexy” on the A side, which is an amazing track. Barish – Yes, amazing progressive kind of an end-of-the-night track.
Sound Revolt: And I assume Joshua did a tech house tune? Subsky & Barish Turker: Barish – It is a very deep, soulful tech house. Perfect for warm ups.
