Interview with Nick Warren

Nick Warren

Soon after it was known who was doing the 28th installment of the Global Underground series we had the chance to hook up with Nick Warren. Here’s what he had to say about his career, Way Out West and message boards few hours before a tremendous gig at No Gravity in club Klatka.

Sound Revolt: What were the reviews of “Don’t Look Now” like?
Nick Warren: Oh great! The response was really, really good. Even people like Sasha and John Digweed liked it a lot. Our next single “Don’t Forget Me” comes out at the end of February with two our club mixes plus remixes by Slam and Hiroshi Watnabi aka Kaito.

Sound Revolt: Do you have good promotion in the media in the UK? Do you have videos and stuff?
Nick Warren: We don’t bother with videos – it’s a waste of time now. Unless MTV are going to play it, there is no point making one. So that’s throwing money away, because MTV are not going to play videos of progressive artists.

Sound Revolt: So it’s not a mass market album?
Nick Warren: No it’s not.

Sound Revolt: And how many copies have you sold?
Nick Warren: I have no idea. I don’t ask. If it’s good news – I’m told. And if it’s bad news - I’m also told.

Sound Revolt: It’s hard to imagine that “Don’t Look Now” could be recorded only “by computers”. Apart from the vocalists and the live drummer, did you have any help from other musicians?
Nick Warren: No. There was one drummer – Damon Reece – on “Fear” but all the rest was us. We’re making records a long time. We have a full Protools set up at home and to master the album we went to the Soho studios in London where’s a full 64 channel desk, which made it sound proper.

Sound Revolt: Is Omi (WOW’s vocalist – editor’s note) with you for good?
Nick Warren: Well, until she fucks up.

Sound Revolt: (laughs)
Nick Warren: At the moment she’s a part of the band but she’s able to do her own thing as well, so it’s a very laidback relationship. But yes – she’s a part of the band.

Sound Revolt: The Bonus Mix is also pure gold – who was mixing it?
Nick Warren: We both do it – it’s the same process as making the tracks for an album.

Sound Revolt: And what was it like having Jody’s father as a manager? Is he a professional manager?
Nick Warren: Interesting. Interesting. That’s all I can say on that matter (laughs). He’s not our manager anymore.
