Interview with Lee Burridge

Lee Burridge

Lee Burridge kindly agreed to talk to us about his 365 project, his forthcoming release in collaboration with Sander Kleinenberg “Everybody on Tour” and plans for the nearest future on the day of his fabulous LoveLee party at Mezzanine, San Francisco - a party which he did as part of the Love Parade weekend events, and which we are eternally grateful we could take part in.

Sound Revolt: Do you remember your party in Piekarnia?
Lee Burridge: Absolutely. That was fantastic and I loved it! I remember that the DJs that played with me were really good. I had a feeling it was a great party with people who were really passionate about music.

Sound Revolt: You just started your New York 365 residency last night. Before then it was Hong Kong and Ibiza. Today you’re playing in San Francisco and tomorrow in Los Angeles. So how is it? Are you touring all over the US or will you be a resident in one city?
Lee Burridge: The basic idea of 365 is to base myself in each place and put up four parties. When I was in Hong Kong there were other weekend nights when I could play in other clubs. It’s much easier on my schedule to play in Asia, when I’m in Asia for a month as opposed to squeezing it within one week. It’s the same thing here but the core idea is to organize four parties in each place.

Sound Revolt: What do you expect to find in the US which you could not find in Hong Kong or Europe?
Lee Burridge: A lot more Americans (laughs). The reason I picked New York as the place of my next residency is that I’ve done very well in New York, I love the city, every time I’m there I say to myself “I’d love to live here” so I’d picked it because I’m selfish and I really want to stay in New York but actually I’ve got a lot of cities on my list. The first year cities of the 365 are already locked down but it’s nice to come back to San Francisco and to remember how good it is so it’s on my list for the following years of the 365.

Sound Revolt: So 365 is going to last for more than just one year?
Lee Burridge: That’s the plan. So far, the 365 project is going amazingly well and I definitely want to extend it.

Sound Revolt: And why San Francisco?
Lee Burridge: I’ve always loved it, San Francisco is such an important place for music and I love the liberal aspects of the city. It’s very relaxed and very different from the rest of the US and it’s got that sort of unique feeling to it. It’s another place I’ve said I’d love to live in. Sure, it’s hard, you can’t live everywhere but I’m trying (laughs). And it’s got such diverse music, I love all the tech acid that was born here but you can basically get every genre of music here.

Sound Revolt: Starting from Scott Hardkiss?
Lee Burridge: Yes, the old Scott Hardkiss sound... and he’s still amazing. Anybody that can create that sort of unique sound just has to be. It’s very difficult to create a unique sound because after a while everybody copies it. But Scott definitely had his own thing for a long, long time. And it’s his music that withstood the test of time.
