The fellows came to Lodz, which is Polish capitol of drum'n'bass, so I was a bit afraid about attendance during their live performance. As it turned out, festival tent filled up with people, but a brick was dropped by Sonic Trip MC, whose goal was to blabber bullshit to the microphone. What's worse, not only when his pals were on the stage. A shame! The most important thing is Flash Brothers liked the party, and their appetite for a truly club event in Poland has been sharpened. Someone's got an idea how to make it, however until then, please enjoy the interview. Sound Revolt: Have you brought your fancy spotlight glasses? Flash Brothers: Ilan: No, we stopped doing it. We got bored a bit of it. This is like a symbol of ours in the live shows so maybe we'll get back to it some day. I know the crowd always asks for it.
Sound Revolt: Let's talk about differences in your style. Are we going to see Flash or Flash Brothers tonight? Flash Brothers: Ilan: Flash Brothers is more commercial name. Actually we're going to play everything tonight, the style of Flash Brothers, which are the same people as Flash and Flashers. We're going to play pumping music, happy music. It's the end summer and people still need to be happy.
Sound Revolt: Not deep and dark progressive? Flash Brothers: Ilan: A little bit of deep, a little bit of dark. Everything! This is our music! And we hope to rock you tonight.
Sound Revolt: I know each of you guys prefer different styles in music. Ruven's is more into melody, cheesy trance; you (Ilan) prefer deeper sounds and Shmuel house and electro beats. How come you make tracks together? Who's the leader? Flash Brothers: Ruven: I seek for new sounds and collect them. Then I sit with Ilan saying what I got and then Shmuel joins us. He's the master of computers and keyboards. Then, sitting together we try to make it not too much trancey what I like, but also not too much dark. Ilan: But a bit of everything. We edit. Choosing the right sounds we build the whole track. Usually we make 8-9 minutes tracks, because we can't express our ideas in our music in 5 minutes. Every track is quite a long story.
Sound Revolt: I expected something different. I thought one day's Ruven' ideas time, another one yours and so on. I'm saying that because you can and you do make both trancey, cheesy stuff and deep progressive productions. All of it is your ideas, Ruven? Flash Brothers: Ruven: Most of it. Me and my brothers like a lot of dj sets, and a lot of different music is going around us. When you like music, you listen to it and sometimes you think "Maybe I could do it better". You know we're also remixing tracks and this is like our language. Ilan: Every time we hear a track we think how to improve it to make it better, so if you get to remix this track, then you can express yourself. Ruven: It's all about what we like in electronic music. We like also house, trance, progressive... Everything is good, but cannot be too cheesy or too dark.
Sound Revolt: When you make your tunes you already know which label is going to issue that? Flash Brothers: Ruven: Not quite. Ilan: You can't know. Ruven: We bring the track to one label and if they don't like it we bring it to another one. Ilan: Because you know which track fits to particular label. Ruven: This is Ilan's part of the job. Ilan: Yes, I got connections...
Sound Revolt: Nermal: A sociable guy! Flash Brothers: (laughs) Yeah! Ilan: It's a part of a machine from the beginnings of creation process to giving it to the right person. And we're doing it until it gets signed. That's it. That's how we work.
Sound Revolt: You've matched Silver Planet's profile perfectly with "The Flight", which is excellent. Tell me more about it. Flash Brothers: Ilan: Thank you! This track was Shmuel's idea. Shmuel: Yes, and we made it a year ago. Ruven: And when we were in England, Dave Conway from Silver Planet came to see us, because we made a remix on one track for them before and he wanted to see us live. We gave him a cd with three tracks. We thought "maybe he would get one of those" and he took all of them! "The Flight" is the first single. Next is called "The Call", which is more uplifting, progressive trance and melodic, and finally more spacey, a kind of Deep Dish style, which we call "Ways". Each one of them will be one sided single with different music style on it. And we're working on a really big project with Silver Planet, but it's a big secret. I'm sure you'll hear very soon about it. Ruven: We like the label very much, James Holden...
Sound Revolt: Nermal: James Holden said a lot of bad things about Silver Planet.... Flash Brothers: Ilan: He doesn't work with Silver Planet anymore. They had an issue to solve; I don't know exactly what the problem was.
Sound Revolt: But case is closed. Nermal: Read the interview on Soundrevolt, you'll know the problem. Flash Brothers: (laughs). Ruven: So that's where I'll find the answer... I will. Ilan: We used to get close with James Holden. We chat on the Internet a lot. He likes our music very much and we're also influenced by his tracks. I think he progresses.
