We’ve been listening to Jori Hulkkonen for many years but we need to make a little confession about our ignorance. 9 studio albums?! That was a surprise for us as we had probably heard not more than 4 of them. ‘Man From Earth‘ is no. 10 and is going to be released only a year after ‘Errare Machinale Est‘.
That’s all when it comes revelations, because even though Jori states in the press release that his move from the deceased F communications to Turbo Recordings effected in a change in style, I’m still hearing the same producer. Buzzing basslines, drilling synths and intriguing male vocals – that’s the Jori we’ve known for the last couple of years. Well, maybe the new piece is indeed more dancey but we still have a feeling that the time gap between the last two albums is so short, because partly ‘Man From Earth‘ consists of the material that didn’t make it onto the ‘Errare Machinale Est‘.
Of course, this is just our supposition but the fact is that some of the tracks go unnoticed. There’s too much humming, buzzing and drilling going on and we sease to perceive when one track ends and another begins. There are some brilliant moments on this release but an album which you really need to focus on in order to listen to it from start to finish, doesn’t deserve a high overall note.
