A year after the premiere of his fourth studio album, 'When a Banana Was Just a Banana', the legendary producer from Philadelphia, Josh Wink, decided to release its remixed version. He asked some friends to remix his tracks and, in view of the fact that among them we can find Jimpster, Radio Slave, Martin Buttrich or Slam duo, I was very curious to hear the result of their work.
Remixing good tracks is not an easy job. Sometimes it takes only a few cosmetic changes to put the original in a brand new light, but often remixes of nice tracks bring nothing new or don’t match their prototypes. Josh’s album consisted of nearly nothing but good productions so, from the beginning, I was a little worried, and unfortunately my worries turned out to be reasonable. I don’t like most of the new versions as much as the original ones, which doesn’t change the fact that they are really solid tracks.
The ones that stand out are ‘Dolphin Smack’, which has been completely reconstructed by Martin Buttrich, who based it on a slightly acid bass line, thanks to which the track definitely gained some verve; ‘Jus Right’ is reworked by Jimpster and ‘Minimum 23’ is in the interpretation of Agoria, who decided to restrain the broken beat of the original and transformed it into a hypnotic party bulldozer.
The rest of the tracks didn’t grab me as much as their archetypes. Personally, I least enjoyed what Matthias Tanzmann did, as he practically gave up the main motive of ‘Airplane Electronique’ by focusing primarily on the percussive layer. Nonetheless, the whole LP is an interesting combination of diverse styles presented by individual producers, and it might be a good alternative, especially for those who, as opposed to me, didn’t exactly like last year’s album from Mr. Joshua Winkelman.
