„Kaiku”, which is simply a Finnish term for echo, is the second after the released in 2004 'Run With Me' artist album from Joakim Ijäs, better known as Kiki. The Finn, who from the mid-90’s has been based in Berlin, got himself recognized as a really good DJ first. Which is something he demonstrated on the first compilation from the 'Boogybytes' series, and a couple of years ago at Warsaw’s Luzztro club, where instead of 2 hours he played for 6, and it was almost impossible to drew him back from the decks. So, 5 years after his debut album Kiki decided to remind us that he is also a talented producer.
The opening track 'Autumn Leaves' definitely portends strictly club orientated material, but fortunately after a moment things start to get more diverse, because similar to his previous offering, 'Kaiku' is at least half filled with tunes surely meant for home listening. But that’s where the similarities end - while the first album was mainly all about fashionable at that time electroclash, on the second one we will not catch a glimpse of it. Tracks with guest appearances are the ones that stand out, as is the case on the aiming into deep house territory 'Good Voodoo', with verses from American MC Chela Simone, and more the techy, complemented with strings, moody 'Immortal' produced in partnership with the Italian experimental quartet Pirica. Besides that, Kiki shifts through genres like downtempo, in the interesting 'No Words Necessary', typical dance floor orientated tech house ('Mogadishu'), and also typical, German minimal ('Living On FFWD'). Thanks to this, we can’t blame the record for being boring, but in consequence the album doesn’t really evolve in one focused direction. The tempo remains more or less unchanged throughout, and the same pulsing kick seems to accompany us through the whole release. Therefore, „Kaiku” doesn’t necessarily stand out from what we have come to expect from most of the artists from the BPitch Control camp, and it will not overshadow the LP from Moderat, which was released only a month earlier.
