In May 2006, when reviewing Troy Pierce’s debut album, I wrote that his next LP might be a milestone in the progress of electronic music. ‘Autumn’ proves that my hunch wasn’t at all wrong, as the newest achievement from Louderbach rises above everything I’ve been given to listen to.
Louderbach is now a duet officially formed by Pierce and a vocalist of punk and hardcore vocalist Gibby Miller, who’s been co-operating with the “m_nus mates” on different projects since 2004. Warm and serene, Miller’s voice brings about associations to the accomplishments of a post-punk group called Bauhaus, but together with the minimal background music composed by Troy Pierce, it develops into a completely new shape. No later than on the second number, ‘Seems Like Static’, with a wonderful coming out of nowhere double-bass solo, is the door opened to dusky spaces in which till the very last minute you will be possessed by a feeling of anxiety combined with suspense.
Troy’s trademark instruments, namely the overdriven bass strings supported by skilfully arranged percussion patterns and a warm, inflected timbre of keyboards, are given a new, higher quality on ‘Autumn’. And Miller's almost omnipresent, deep and oh so melodic voice transforms the outcome into a so far unprecedented in electronic music minimal and post-punk dimension. I’ll have nothing against this new trend finding its followers and copycats.
