The first EP of the Moderat trio, which was released in 2002 by Gernot Bronsert, Sebastian Szary and Sascha Ring, was born from such pain that at the end of the creation process the artists decided to change its title to ‘At the Cost of Health’ (‘Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit’) and to suspend their cooperation. After that they decided to concentrate on their own careers and released fantastic albums: ‘Orchestra of Bubbles’ (Apparat with Ellen Allien) and ‘Hello Mom!’ (Modeselektor). Spring 2008 brought about the temptation to create a joint full-length record.

Their absolutely extraordinary debut album was recorded at Hansa Studios in Berlin with the help of analogue hardware from the '70s and a reverb algorithm which was specifically developed for this record. The result can’t be compared to anything that comes out of a computer. The sound of the album is deep and juicy, simply complete. You can safely say that ‘Moderat’ has soul.

The music on the album – despite the exquisite, heart-grasping and stomach-squeezing melodies – is first and foremost a gamut of arrangements, out of which many will be discovered after several listens to the record. The core of the album is formed of dark yet stirring and nostalgic productions, with the most beautiful ‘Seamonkey’, which brings to mind the output of Turkish artist Yunus Guvenen from the time when he was at his best. However, the record is lightened up and diversified by Rastafarian and rap vocal displays in the amplified with jungle bass ‘Slow Match’, almost a radio-song ‘Sick with It’, or the absolutely superb track ‘Beatswaysick’ (served as a bonus). The crowning achievment of the album is a fantastic dubstep remix of ‘Rusty Nails’ (another bonus), in which Shackleton transfers the listener into the wonderland of electronic music which is spiced with a shade of sublime Depeche Mode productions from the past.

‘Moderat’ is an album which you simply must have. I can only hope the band will be able to re-create the mood of this record during their live performances.
