Collaborations between alpha-animals can inspire mixed feelings: In the worst case, everyone involved punches each other in the teeth. Fortunately, Gernot Bronsert, Sebastian Szary (aka Modeselektor) and Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) left these customary practices behind and with Moderat, created a real dream team of electronic music along with an album of the same name.
In spite of the above-mentioned fears, experiments with Sascha Ring's voice produced daring, even epoch-making results. It was more than reason enough to take the killer song “Rusty Nails” on BPC194 as the first single.
The debut single is representative of the musical concept of the trio: a maximal, polished sound aesthetic with atmospheric density with driving but reserved rhythms already developed.
On the album version, the proverbial undertow emerges after a few bars with somber, radiant beauty without overwhelming the listener with excessive melancholy. Breathe deep, sit back, and let it work!
Credit where credit is due: star-remixers Booka Shade interrupt their album production, effectively fan out the complex soundscape, specifically place their fragments over a straightforwardly styled beat, and thereby make “Rusty Nails” amazingly weightless and 100% dancefloor compatible.
Everything but 'weightless and just as danceable as it gets is how the mix by TRG presents itself, the Romanian who is still regarded as an insider's tip in these parts, with countless releases on Tempa, Immerse and Hessle. Broken, but efficient and axiomatic set beats react with earthy sub-base and beds Sascha Ring's hymn in the same chorus. Techstep-oriented sound cosmos- “Walking on rusty nails...”
