Let’s be honest - the content of the double debut album from Michael Hunter has as much in common with electronic music as DJ Mag’s top DJs with eclectic musical taste. The difference is, it makes no sense to write about the rank, as that topic releases mostly negative emotions, whereas Pablo’s record certainly deserves attention.
Pablo, or rather his music, is already very well known to computer game players, as he’s the guy who composed the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto. And while listening to ‘Turntable Technology’ you’ll quickly become convinced that this is the genre the artist feels the strongest in. The 27 tracks which have been placed on both CDs are an expression of longing for the American era of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and for the purpose of recording the album he must have sampled a few dozen records from those times. Listening to the album, you’ll most likely think of giant pink Cadillacs, black hat hoodlums and, of course, the Jack Rabbit Slim’s Twist Contest.
But let’s come back to now as, beside the atmosphere of a bygone era, you will find on this record a decent dose of contemporary hip hop, soul, jazz and Latino. Waste of time? I guarantee you it’s not! Begin the trip at ‘The Story of Sampling’, in which you may fall in love from top to bottom.
