Official Press Release: In retrospect, it was probably inevitable: Philip Sherburne has long been so central a presence in electronic music, it was only a matter of time before his name turned up on a piece of vinyl. Being a friend and supporter of Lan Muzic from day one, it just felt right to have him on board -- especially because he gave us one monster of a track! Besides being one of electronic music's most passionate and talented scribes, he's been into making music from an early age. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Philip was a committed student of piano, clarinet and saxophone, and a self-taught hack on the electric guitar. With adolescence and the mid-'80s came a small collection of synthesizers, drum machines, effects boxes and a four-track recorder. Over time this equipment vanished and fifteen years would pass before he decided, after lord knows how many record reviews, "I can do that, too," invested in Ableton Live and began amassing hardware once again. The original is everything that Lan Muzic likes – a solid groove, unmistakably techno, invitingly dark, and just a little bit trippy. All that in a tight ,fat first production that displays his musicality – we think there will be many more. Exercise One couldn’t wait to get their hands on the parts for a remix and have created a classic X1 production that stretches out and gets horizontal, rippling and repeating, getting freaky and hypnotic. They used the unadulterated version of the arpeggio that Philip chopped to pieces, so in a way the relationship between the original cut and the remix gets turned on its head. Ultimately, though, the remix is all about that groove: not minimalist, but mentalist. Comments[0]
