Dan Curtin - Pull Up

Official Press Release:

For the fifth release on mobilee's sister label LEENA, we welcome a special guest, one who very likely needs no introduction: Dan Curtin.

With a career stretching back over 16 years, Dan is no stranger to electronic music's A-list, with dozens of releases on labels like Strictly Rhythm, Peacefrog, Tuning Spork and of course his own Metamorphic Recordings. Since 2003, Dan has lived in Berlin, but his long history holding it down in Cleveland, Ohio has helped him to carve out a sound unlike any other, informed by nearby Detroit and Chicago as well as reaching out simultaneously to Europe and Japan.

Dan's releases are nothing if not special—infectiously polyrhythmic, uncommonly deep—and his LEENA debut is no exception. "Pull Up" is everything modern dance music should be. Riding the line between house and techno, it offsets jittery drum machines with liquid syncopations; a stumbling bass line and insistent clave patterns lay out an irresistible groove while a weird, quicksilvery melody rolls atop it all like a mercury marble. As if the command to dance weren't clear enough, the occasional shout of "Pull up!" tells you what to do, with authority and joy.

"Glance" harnesses a similar palette of raw drum machines and analog squeal, but it's at once deeper and freakier, driven by a coolly pumping chord progression and torn asunder again and again by blasts of white noise, head-over-heels snare rolls and atonal synthesizer explosions.

That's a lot of information to process, but Dan folds it all together into a form that's as lithe and compact as it is extroverted. Your ears—and your feet—will agree.
