Niki and Christian is a couple of Italian producers and DJs who have introduced themselves to the bigger audience due to the contract signed with Sun Generation Rec., where they had been releasing under Sonar. Their “Arfik” track has opened doors of many British labels like Saw, Renaissance, Primate or Fire. Now they deal with G.Pal’s Swift to release this double EP.
“Eyes” is a dark composition, which perfectly fits into trend of singing slightly out of tune. Additionally, the whole piece is mixed in a way, that Mette Marie Kongsved’s vocals are too much above the music. And what is the music like? Peaceful, trancey sounds for a composition rather nostalgic, more for a background of a chimney and a bear’s hide than to the dancefloor.
Musical virtues can be fully admired (or not) thanks to the dub version on the first disc’s flipside. There’s no that slightly irritating vocal here, however there is a repeating melody theme, played one time with the strings of bass and another time with the keys of synths. Wearisome in the long run.
The second disc includes two remixes of a track called “Loss”. “Deep Mix” is a quite insipid and also dark composition, which somehow cannot rivet my attention. Nothing changes until the short vocal sample appears, but it’s still not enough to be better than an “averager”.
The “Groovy” version should at least kick harder, which is also portended by a tougher beat of percussion. Unfortunately it does not kick at all, as the track with every minute loses its solid basis. There’s more the vocal part, which I was interested in at the “Deep” version, however emotional layer and artistic values are close to nothing.
Taking into consideration the style, the accomplishments of these two Italian fit into Swift Records perfectly. Nevertheless, to make one interested in that kind of music, there’s a need of an idea for a track. Can’t say the technique is bad, but the most important thing is gone. The guys are so far from the masters like G.Pal or Sultan.
