Sultan, Stephanie, Shivers, Shinichi – a lot of S for one release, isn’t? This sequence would be perfectly completed with the word Superb as the past collaborations of the aforementioned “companies” have really been like that. Does the story repeat itself?
If I were to judge only from the original mix the answer would be “Yes!”. I would exaggerate saying that a though of Sultan’s beat gives me shivers but the softness of drums and crystal hats by Osama Al Sarraf are truly one of a kind. His new track will probably not surprise his fans. However the soulful melodies and melancholic vocals together with that beat is something I can listen to in large amounts.
The problem appears, when the rhythm is replaced with a less magic section, because that’s what mainly Tommyboy did making as many as three versions of “Shivers”. Unfortunately, I cannot listen to much to the Housematic mixes with their head-pounding drums as I’m allergic to monotony. The Remix differs from the Vocal and Dub but it’s still to close to the original. Laziness, lack of ideas or the label’s requirement?
My complaints end with a nice work by Mannel who rearranged the parts to fit in his crafty rhythmics. He also added a sound from Chab’s “My Memory (Romania Edit)” and the famous rustle known from Chiapet’s “Westworld” but that’s for those who like to pick on details.
Clark Chemistry Mix could be called the Original Dub as the similar but calmer overtone and less vocal fit the definition.
I have to admit that listening to six tracks with the same main theme a dozen times is not an easy task. I do not complain but this pack would do well without two of the Tommyboy’s mixes. Then it would be Superb.
