I’m starting this review somewhat late, as the single was released last year. It didn’t arrive on time, but I think it’s worth giving a few words to it, even if for the magnificent names standing behind those productions. Soul Tan is no one else but half European, half Canadian master of nostalgia Sultan, who has been frequently delivering high quality productions to the scene, also together with vocalist Stephanie Vezina.
“How Long” is a slightly different interpretation of patents which have been probed by the duo in the past. Massive and regular rhythm section, monotonous bassline, delicate keyboard accents and vocal from Stephanie – it’s all well known to me. Unfortunately I didn’t hear anything new here, and – what’s even worst – the vocalist sings like she’s got no idea what the melody should be like. That all together makes probably the most poor production from Sultan I’ve ever heard.
Steve Porter probably had similar feelings on the original because he decided to rebuild almost the whole track, thereby the remix sounds far better. New melodies, new rhythmics, less wailing, more singing – a true dance music production. There’s also an original, made up by Porter and played on the breakdown exit melody, which heavily draws my attention. That works!
Sultan gave up his guitar but I think it’s not enough to recognize the piece to be a breakthrough. Stephanie has also managed to sing better before, which all means I’m not satisfied with their work this time. However, Stever Porter with his every single new production presents a fresh, new idea. And I rate this release that high only because of him.
