The music of Welsh group Hybrid has been running with me since my very first days of journey with electronic music. In effect I can safely say that if there was no that duo, the European breakbeat scene would be still on jungle stage. It was Hybrid who slowed down tempo, who added melody to the genre, remaining still an avant-garde group. And Distinct’ive Records promotes exactly this kind of avant-garde in its series “YxK”. Under that mark the world has seen before compilations from Hyper, Tayo or Dub Pistols.

The album beginning is so dark that I barely recognize the authors’ style. “Let It All Out” which opens the album deserves a title of the best track on it, so it begins really hot here. The first part of the set is quite similar to “Global Underground 026”, which calls my good memories once more, though with an every following track I’m stopping to perceive any similarity.

The gentlemen James and Mike have selected and mixed their tracks so clever, that in effect of joining varied pieces, arose almost a monolith. I want to say that you listen to the album at once and without any disturbance, despite all those various tracks compiled.

The artists specially for that occasion have also prepared two fantastic remixes, adding to the compilations a bit of glitz. “Blackout” is in my opinion one of the best tracks done this year, though once again I prefer an instrumental version. However, a symphonic version of “In Good We Trust” may easily complete with the Harry Gregson-Williams’ achievements on the movie soundtrack market.

Hybrid most of all is well known for their unforgettable live performances. Their own productions and DJ sets also show that their musical versatility probably has no borders. At least I’m here pay homage to their genius.
