I have to confess, that I asked for that record only because of James Holden remix, which obviously does not mean that System 7 brand is new to me. I have familiarized myself with that band thanks to Angelo Mike’s sets, in the times he spun more techno then trance. The duo has been active for over ten years now, have released a dozen or so albums, own its record label and – what’s most important – a good reputation on the market.
The original version would be “only” a solid trance track, if not the parts of electric guitar. I can assure you, that they are not electronic samples but live guitar playing. Unfortunately apart from that theme (by the way, there’s too much of it) there’s completely nothing else in that track. Just a guitar solo on the background of some cosmic noise. I wonder which of those boring parts was done by Sander Kleinenberg as his name is also present in the credits.
The Son Kite remix is a much more successful composition. First of all, it’s well built, more musical, energetic and lively. The guitar parts appear only in the middle of the track and work as an icing. I think this is how the piece should sound in original.
The best part for the dessert. I have no idea how come that James Holden got this track to work on it, but I know the effect is worth of enjoying it. Because each and every element of that composition has its place in the whole track conception, which makes us waiting final with our mouths open. Additionally the mysterious, kind of sad melody creates the unique mood of contemplation. Excellent work!
I wish James Holden could stop copying himself in his live mixes and try inventing always something new, like in the producing tracks process. I wish he could play less and create more, like in the past. But maybe that’s one of reasons to buy the record? I rate it 6 only because of him.
