John Digweed - Fabric 20

One of the best clubs in the UK entrusted another legend with recording the 20th installment of the famous series. The tracklisting known for quite a while has astonished quite a large group of John Digweed’s fans. The repertoire suggested a trip through tech house, electro and techno rather than progressive. Well... it’s Fabric.

John in the interview for us seemed to distance himself from progressive and you won’t hear that music on his latest album at all. What you will hear is a large dose of new and fresh sounds that have been intensively grabbing my attention through the last few months. Sounds that are hard to pigeonhole, which makes them even more fascinating. “Fabric 20” is first and foremost a friendly, dance atmosphere full of melodies and based on various rhythmics. We’ve got some charming singing in “Forgive & Forget”, some old school funk in „True Science” and a full on electro “Knob Job”. Digweed perfectly combines all the tracks into one whole but the whole unfortunately lacks something. It simply doesn’t have the claw. Despite all those tremendous tracks the album does not carry away. What does carry away are the incredible “Emico” and “In The Dark”, which I will be probably listen to in – let’s say – a years time but I do not suspect returning to “Fabric 20”.

Isn’t it ironic that such great productions mixed flawlessly do not give the effects? I only hope at least some of the orthodox progressive fans will poke out their heads in search of new music.
