Nathan Fake is British, 20 years old, listens only to techno and Boards of Canada. In principle that’s all we know about him... And that he’s “a very sweet guy”, as James Holden – Border Community label owner – expressed himself interviewed by us.

“Outhouse” – the track before it was included on James Holden’s “Balance 005” compilation – had been promoted by, among others, Hernan Cattaneo. Both he and Holden placed it on their best of September charts. Although I know the piece perfectly, first listening to a single version throws me on the floor again. That’s because the track is much faster, than its “Balance” version – 132 bpm!

Let’s tune in. Fake introduces the track with a sharp, but pleasantly bongo varied percussion, to which he applies more and more humming bass, finally becoming a leading track melody. After a short moment we hear another one, played on high tunes, which along with low bass makes a deeply piercing arrangement. Flesh creeps! Now it’s turn of penetrating, heavy techy hi-hats, leading the piece to its first breakdown. Here, dark and cold as ice atmosphere of British beach on rainy evening, is brighten by a ray of returning leading theme, to leave us at the peak with dirty, techy beat and crushing bass. From the moment we’re spinning on the carousel of sounds, which on its every round loses ones to pick other passengers. The second breakdown is a bit warmer and turns into a phrase known from the beginning of the track, which slightly, through different variations on beats, leads us till the end.

“Fluffy Mix” is an ambient “Outhouse” version, though I’m not really sure if I hear attacking sharp sounds of percussion instruments, or the drilling mind melody known from the original version in the foreground. However, this nearly 5 minute remix, could perfectly make any madness causing method stronger.

The “Beaty Tool Mix” title suggests the piece to be much stronger. And really, from early beginning, Nathan Fake tests his listener with all kinds of drums and bongos, filled with a simple jumping bass. The remix has its breakdown too, more or less in the middle of the track. Fake spreads a main original melody on it, but played reversed. This sounds completely like a Hindu snake charmer song. Its being revealed that the “simple jumping bass” is in fact the same “humming bass” from the original mix, but heavy cut on melody.

Nathan Fake’s “Outhouse” is the second, after Holden’s “A Break in the Clouds” production from Border Community. That’s also one of my favorite singles of the year, not sure yet if not the best one. To announce a verdict I’ll wait for emotions to subside.
