PQM - You Are Sleeping - Remixes

PQM is known – among others – for his club remixes of pop hits, that make him hit the tops of charts. It’s said that he tries to combine modern and classical rock with hip-hop and drum’n’bass. The best is to fit everything in one track adding a lot of house sound. No, I’m not trying to be malicious, although there’s no song that I liked among the stuff he produced for 6 years now. With one exception which is his remix of Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”.

PQM stands for Prince Quick Mix. There’s nothing to laugh at because people say he’s incredibly fast behind the decks. The “prince” in front rather comes from his hip-hop roots, than a need to be more important. Whatever, I think it’s good he uses PQM abbreviation...
Luke Chable – 22 Australian who managed to do a lot in progressive and house music. This is a sort of James Holden guy, but living on the other side of the globe. His profile will shortly appear on our pages.
Dave From Dallas (David Beard) and Dj Redeye (Scott Canfield) are relatively new on the music market, yet I’m starting the journey with the release from their remixes.

The dub pass goes first. Built on very short loops, very techy and groovy track, in which different overlapping phrases simply crush listener’s consciousness after 3rd breakdown. Well done, very piercing and not to say hypnotic remix. Based on just few tones, but the arrangement – simply amazing! And there’s not an ounce of vocals which will be described in the next few paragraphs.

I didn’t take a liking to the 2nd remix of the guys (vocal mix). The same tones have been played with different samples and put in other sequence. Even the ringing, which was supposed to fake an alarm clock, sounds like a school break announcement. A very cold and monotonous track – made with a lack of idea.

Let’s see what Quick and Luke Chable have done. You know the vocal pass for sure as it appeared on James Holden’s “Balance 005” compilation. I need to say that I don’t usually get into tracks where a vocalist recites or shouts some lyrics. Though I liked this one, maybe because the lyrics say a story which is both realistic and appears to be probable.
The song is about the guy, who picks up an unusual (or maybe usual) prostitute and decides to cure her weakness. Well, she’s addicted to smack and allows anybody to hit her for a small fee. So he sells out his all belongings, but after that she chases him away when he’s completely broke. He ends up on the street.
Now the music. The fellows came with a different approach to the rhythm section, in which all the instruments has been filtered and echoed. According to that we feel like hanging in some well, additionally going up and down every few seconds.
Now it’s turn for a deep, melodic and sometimes even humming bass, creating a background for growing subtle melody, which is so characteristic to Chable. Luke likes to jump through the tones up and down with intervals of two octaves which effects in outwardly disordered composition - just like Holden. The piece takes its full shape when different layers begin to overlap each other, this way creating an amazing harmony of tones. Awesome finale.

The dub pass is basically the same version as the vocal pass is, but without vocals. Here you can enjoy the sound of the instruments and the piece’s arrangement with no obstacles.

I consider this release to be one of the best among the ones which came out this year. I’m sure it was a good idea to include remixes – particularly the dub – from Dave From Dallas and Dj Redeye. I won’t get bored of those too fast.
