Listening to 23rd Fabric, even fragmentary, one could easily feel the classic sound of the label, which is industrial electronic music from the borderland of electro. After few previous, how different mixes delivered by Beyer, Digweed and Heather, this one is rather the continuation of Weatherall’s “nineteen”. Ivan Smagghe is one of the top DJs in France, but his popularity exploded only three years ago, mainly due to the boom of electro, which he’s been playing since ever. I doubt he likes this pigeonhole though, as the album sounds electro only in it’s half. And if the first part, which ends up with superb (don’t mention the acapella) “Heiden” by Meyer, is coherently growing, then begins rather annoying a-bit-of-everything part. Techno, minimal big beat, some funky, and even one rock song, which I simply can’t stand – all on one album. The set however defends itself with the mixing. Smagghe joins particular tracks very adroitly, despite differences in the keys and the rhythmics. There’s no musical pearls. Comparing to mentioned before Weatherall, Smagghe’s selection does rather badly. So the record neither surprises, nor disappoints. Just the average.
