After James Zabiela had disappointed me with his last compilation “ALiVE”, I approached “Utilities” almost without enthusiasm. But the boy, fascinated with computers and robots, has finally found a center of gravity between the hardware and dance. He’s also managed to resist the big pressure of Ableton’s technology and survived from being entirely eaten. So he has proposed one mix from the computer and one from yet traditional CDJs and an EFX unit. “Computed” title certainly indicates software Live from Ableton, however what James has used for mixing the tracks doesn’t really matter. The record is predominated by the atmosphere of a great house-styled fun, enriched by slightly more ambitious elements of tech and “robo”. Yet the first track, “Atlantic View”, relates rather to James’ party nature than to dirty excesses known even from amazing “Sound In Motion” album. Further goes a bit different part. Sick “Windowlicker” remix (which I incidentally swallowed only now), “This Is Sick” and “EyeAmComputer” make the music rather for listening. But starting from “On/Off” the breaks and house party begins, with almost beach-like “Future Love” and festival driven “Snabeln” at the end. The “Recorded” is sort of a new side of Zabiela. Excluding bland and kitschy “Through You”, chosen titles form deeper and more hypnotic vision of the disco. After a while we finally discover this is the same “acid“ James, who sounds more delicate without constant scratching and sound twisting. This is how he’s becoming more accessible to a wider audience. My favourite track on this part is sensual and slightly nostalgic “Simon Says”, nevertheless the biggest virtue of this album is its cohesion. I’ve got the feeling that James Zabiela has again found a method for doing good compilations. I listen to the record with the same pleasure both at home and at work. If he could only free himself from Sasha’s influence (which can be heard in closing “Sehnsucht” ) it’d be marvelous. Despite that, “Utilities” makes me wait for his new compilation with bated breath again.
