„Layered Sounds” second edition has at least two faces. First one is a cluster of downtempo and leftfield productions for drizzly weather in October, the other holds progressive breaks for lazy swings during breakfast coffee on Sunday. Following Digweed’s words, the compilation is a brilliant reflection of today’s Bedrock music and where it’s going. Let’s see then.
The first record includes mostly well-known tracks, very often overplayed. As a matter of fact we’ve got some new remixes, but not even one has raised my bottom up. There’s, however, amazing original production “Open Arms” from Yunus Guvenen and lyrical “I’ll Kill You” from Terry Grant. The counterbalance for these two are appalling remixes of “All I Know” and “Postcard From the Edge”, where howling vocals can throw the strongest balance off.
The second CD doesn’t look better. “Forge”, “Reality Theory”, “Emerald” – are all antiques that I skip like TV channels during advertising broadcasts. Is there really such a problem with good new music to re-promote 2003’ releases?
And is this compilation really reflecting Bedrock in 2005? I dare to say it’s not! On the background of fantastic releases from Pole Folder, Lisle and Masiello, this one looks quite poor. But if you want a record where almost all the tracks you know by heart before it enters your CD player, then don’t hesitate to buy it.
