Yunus Guvenen is a figure that doesn’t need to be introduced in Soundrevolt. Enough said the Turkish producer shook the whole progressive scene, releasing such enthralling and innovating tunes as ‘Red Pilot’, ‘Tigris’ and ‘Eufrat’ from the Delta EP and - under the guise of Mavi – ‘My Dream’. The real earthquake was brought about this summer, though, as the two-vinyl EP titled ‘Invasion’ – the name tells everything – was released by Bedrock Records. Embrace of this could easily be a subject of endless elaborations. To make a long story short, ‘Invasion’ is one of the greatest releases of 2003 and despite the fact that is has been just a couple of months since its premiere Yunus doesn’t waste time and gives out a new 12”. The EP is opened by ‘Underwater’ – a track which set the tongues wagging a few weeks ago, just after its debut in a set designed for Digweed and broadcasted by KissFM. Since then it has been one of the most anticipated productions. Starting with a simple, calm bassline tune teems with oriental touches, carefully and skillfully blended with a massive beat. The atmosphere is built grandly; its particular elements are added gradually, leading to the effective breakdown, in which riveting, original melodies eventually emerge, creating the core of the upcoming part of underwater voyages. Background full of propping up, remorselessly weird samples and occasional breaks bring a staggering energy out of a seemingly slow music piece. That’s ample evidence that “the highest BPM the better the track” does not apply to everything. Similar to other Turkish’s productions ‘Underwater’ also goes off in the last minutes. The feeling of deficiency blurs away when additional melodies finally join the ongoing ones. As usual in the case of Yunus, it may take a few listens before it “hits” you, but believe me – it’s worth it. I didn’t use the words like “deep” and “mysterious” in the review of the first tune on purpose – these adjectives describe the feeling of ‘Underwater’ very well, but after taking a closer look at ‘Take a Breath of You’, they seem to be at least out of place. The first seconds of the latter track give away what we can expect: muted, unclear voices vibrating among various creaks, cracks and thumps forecast a heavy piece, resembling rather goa than progressive. However, it’s not the end of attractions – the emergence of the rhythm section does not mean Yunus putting a stop to experiments. The mood is created successively by throwing bolder groans and moans and a subtle melody. Once again we have a chance to admire a myriad build-up, after which the wall of fantastically arranged sounds, unique to Yunus, pours out. ‘Head First EP’ on all counts is a successful release, yet again showcasing the talent and skills of Yunus. These characteristic to him productions will be released in December by Silver Planet and no doubting one should pay attention to them. At least after reading this article. Comments[0]
