Steve Lawler - Lights Out 2

What can people do, when the lights go out? Party! Especially, when there’s Steve Lawler behind the decks. He turned off the lights for the second time, but the first instalment of this Global Underground series wasn’t to promising if you asked me. I’ve never been a big fan of Steve, because tribal in excess makes me tired and the vocal orgasms almost make me puke. However I do like the progressive and twisted side of Lawler. After hearing his latest Essential Mix I excpected the worst from “LO 2” though. But what a pleasant surprise! The newest compilation mainly consist of the things I like in Lawler’s style.

CD 1 takes off with drums and scares me with an orgasm but the moment of disbelief is short and ends with Diamond Dogs that introduce the better, full of singing part of the album. The disc is reigned by good house music with – what I call - electric vibe. Tracks like “Follow This Beat” or “Dancin Queen” are what this style stands for. My favourite tracks of the CD are “London Night” and “Music Is Magic”. A half of the first one contains the very popular and personaly hated vocal “it’s a spiritual thing...”, which doesn’t sound so horrible here, because of being blended with a nice female singing. The aforementioned “Music Is Magic” ends the disc in an unexpected style. Fullon progressive and trancey style that is. The best track of a very good CD!

As it turned out, the last track of the first disc heralded the temper of CD 2. We’re going to explore the darker and more stupefieing side of Lawler’s music. The party goes on and the people are hot and full up. The start is similar to the one we’ve heard on CD1 but everything seems to be stronger. And when we hear tracks like “Make It Hot” and “R.R.R” all we can do is stand with our hands on our heads. Well, screaming during the hammering “R.R.R” is also allowed. Then it’s time for a dose of twisted and dirty house. This dose is too big for me and makes me really bored. However fans of this music might feel very content – it’s just a matter of taste. A bit of iberican sound in “No Puedo Olvidarme” wakes me up and the amalgamation of electro with Elvis in “Future Spirit” keeps my attention for a while. Still, this is not enough to give the disc a good mark. Nice beginning, boring middle and mediocre ending – that’s what the second CD is all about for me.

However, let’s not forget about the first-class disc one, which will make quite a stir on more than one b4 party. I might not become one of Steve’s big fans but he has definitely gained a few points with “Lights Out 2”. The darkness is calling me...
