Nic Fanciulli - Renaissance presents Nic Fanciulli

Nic Fanciulli’s career has gained momentum. He is one of six DJs featured at the new weekly BBC1 “Residency” show, his ClubClass is moving from his home town in Kent to the Ministry of Sound in London and Renaissance issues his compilation - Nic’s second one after the mix put together in 2004 for “MixMag”.

„Renaissance presents Nic Fanciulli” consists of two CDs. The first one is more housey, melodic, and slower. CD1 features songs, each telling us its own story and amazing sounds ranging from funk to jazz. Nic’s intro has my full attention after only a few notes and leads to a little melancholic “For The Time Being”. With every song I go deeper and deeper toward progressive groove of „Changes”, where finally I can catch my first breath. Afterwards, the best two pieces on CD 1 arrive, “Phonkee Fresh” and “What is?”. The upbeat energy continues to swirl and the disc ends with “Flylife”. Despite Nic’s efforts you can hear that it is a 1997 production.

CD2 is a glorious mixture of tweaky sounds, a part of which was either produced by Nic himself or as Buick Project. Housey “Re:evaluate” by Electric Press is still a referral to the previous disc, but what follows is tech acid and electro beautifully mixed in a captivating rhythm. I cannot praise enough the idea to put the absolutely fantastic “Heart” between “At the Rave” and “Wanna Get Wet” as it allowed to bring out its unique flavor and amazing sounds. All other pieces would sound like nothing more than sad reflections of Woolford’s stunning production. And then, following Nic’s own excellent production – “Squirreled”, Trentemoller proves his class again in a tweaky remix of „Coincidance”. The only piece which I do not think contributes a lot to the whole is “Deep Inside the Groove”, which in digital release is replaced by PJ Davy and his “Bollyfella”.

Even though I had known some pieces which comprise Nic Fanciulli’s mix before its release I must admit it took me a while before I discovered and started to appreciate its all intrinsic details. It did not want to submit at my first or even second attempt to understand. Now I am convinced, it is one of the best compilations I had a chance to listen to during the whole of 2005. Nic has kept effects under control, each sound has its own unique place and meaning and gives me a chance to fully appreciate all that great music.
