This could be the shortest review ever to be written. It would very much suffice to point out that “Hallucienda” contains 75 minutes of excellent electronic music, perfectly mixed by DJ Three - a New Yorker, also known for his great productions and remixes, and then end by saying that the only thing I did not like about it was that it was too short. But I just can’t deny myself the pleasure of writing some more about it, especially that while discussing the mix internally at Sound Revolt, we’d been dangerously close to “.. and I’ll hate you forever” phase before we finally agreed who’d be the one to have that pleasure.

„Hallucienda” was put together and released for the tenth anniversary of Hallucination Recordings by Three, who is the A&R director for the label. In 2003 Three initiated the establishment by Hallucination Recordings of its sub-label, Hallucination Limited, which seeks out more underground sound. From approximately 45 tunes in the collection of Halluciantion Limited, Three chose 12 and put them on his compilation. The majority of the tunes has never been released before. Despite the limited number of tracks to choose out from, Three’s perfect selection achieves result which most labels, even larger ones, can only dream of. Three’s sound escapes easy classification. It’s a well balanced, smooth combination of techno, tech-house, electro, with only a hint of effects and delicate, almost minimalist mixing.

I find “Hallucienda” music captivating right from its first, amazing electro sounds of „Say Hello”. “Timebomb” is a tune full of unique and diverse breaks, with a sensual, dimmed vocal humming about “sex thru electronics”. In “Dharma Fields” the melody comes in and goes out, its distorted, tapelike sounds lead to the strong, tech-house tune of “New York To Me” with great, moving Terryn Westbrook. „Proletariat” leads to deeper and darker areas, all the way to the excellent electro sounds of “Reverse Charge”. Progressive yet melodic “Change” with soulful vocals prepare for the deep techno of “Back to Gravity”, a tune which just makes you shake it. The minimal „History Is Not Shrinking”, reworked by Mount Sims, is full of funk and its vocal sounds like it was recorded in the beginning of the nineties. Sensual Lisa Shaw in the electric „This Time” reminds me of “Frantic” soundtrack, leading to the unique, stylish electro of the final tune of „Lovefix”.

The enhanced CD allows you to download the bonus second part of the album from Hallucination Limited webpage. The second part of the mix is filled with excellent, captivating sounds and is only a notch less diverse than the first one.

If I didn’t know that “Hallucienda” was released this year, it would be really hard for me to decide on the year of its making. I think, it’s because its sound is not only a reflection of what is fresh and fashionable, and modern but also reaches deeper back in time. And if you try hard enough, I am sure you will hear the sound of the future, as well. Definitely not to be missed!
