Carl Craig - Fabric 25

Compilation number 25, a crown of the first quarter of the first Fabric’s hundred, has fallen to Carl Craig, one of the leading artists of the Detroit scene. His name is being spoken among top players like Derrick May or Juan Atkins. His “The Album Only Known as…” was released under Rush Hour only a week ago, and a new Fabric compilation will be out any day.

The album is kept in the mood of good house alternated with balanced Detroit techno… and also something else, but a comment on that will come later. We’ve got as many as 18 tracks compiled, not to mention that some of them are really good songs. Let me quote psychedelic “Sweat” and completely Balkan “Jupita”, which sounds like a continuation of the musical journey around the world started by Rob da Bank. So Craig stops off for tribal songs in Africa and some minimalism in Israel. The stronger tracks are undoubtedly “Most Precious Love”, “The Panther” and yet slightly worn but still amazing “Alive”.

Would be perfect, if Craig wouldn’t come up with an idea of imitating a live mix, showing off his vocal abilities. Calls “clap your hands” and screams like “ouuhhhh” and “yyeeaaahhh” sound very silly while coming out from the speakers at home. Silly or even piteously. So, music – yes. Craig – no.
