I heard “Across the Ocean” for the first time as long ago as last March, when Pete Tong played it as a white label record during his BBC 1 show. Since then it’s become very popular with almost all big names in the DJ world and rocked summer dancefloors. Thanks to the double release by Yoshitoshi, it is also the lesser DJ world members and the public at large who can now finally and officially start enjoying the sounds from across the ocean. The original mix is a deep, melodic and captivating tune, built with skill and craftsmanship around amazing electric basslines. And it is its exceptional basslines which merit praise and notice and stir dancefloors. Minus goes to Perez and Dariush for the fake gunshot sounds. “Across the Ocean” can also be a schoolbook example of how difficult it is to make a good remix of an otherwise great tune. Out of the three brave ones who tried, the only one who succeeded, was Max Graham whose remix has a nice edge and some fantastic electro acid sounds. Dean Coleman’s remix deprives the original of its dynamic diversity. Its own dynamics laboriously raises only to fall like a boring plain sine wave. Ethnic vocals added by Coleman for some impossible to understand reason, are nothing short of cheesy. Samio’s remix starts interestingly but then he plays too much with filters and panning. The original version of “Across the Ocean” is a great production. It’s a pity, that except for Max Graham, the other Yoshitoshi DJs did not accomplish anything to remember. Comments[0]
