We were admiring Steve Porter’s creativity reviewing his artist album “Homegrown” last year. The same has also honored the top five records of 2005 in the recap we’ve made. The more willingly I have reached for the newest “Porterhouse”, which was supposed to be further expression of the sounds being cultivated by the artist. And fortunately it is. The title points not only to the genre, but also refers to the key that Porter used to choose compositions for this album, as all the producers have been forming sort of “Boston’s area Porter’s family” promoting this kind of banging funky house. “Porterhouse” is a compilation of as many as 26 pieces gathered on one CD, so by the force of events he has not only chosen these tracks, but also cut them to leave only best parts. This approach has created the powerful album, without even a single note of indecision. The most interesting tracks are “Keep Sake” from Matt Rowan, “Blowing Up My Phone” remixed by Bon Johnson, “Bi Polar Express” from Porter and Reavey, “The Limit”, “Funk Theory”, “Sentient Soul”... in principle the whole middle of the album is incredibly good and I should have named at least 5 more amazing tunes. And if the funky beginning is not really something I’d fall in love with, then I really support stunning combination of Clannad and Hybrid in “Time Alone” at the end. The album is a perfection that should make us watching closely actions of Steve Porter and his Boston area family.
