Louderbach (Troy Pierce) has been a Berliner by choice for the last 2 years just like Magda and Richie Hawtin, who have found it easier to live and produce in the cradle of European minimal than in overregulated America. He decided to release his debut album on his own abel Underl_ne.
“Enemy Love” is an album full of electronic music which is not necessarily minimal but, nonetheless, is extremely interesting and filled with surprising sounds and arrangements. Each track on the album is unique, brings about different associations and arouses various emotions. Gibby Miller’s vocals in the background of the submarine sounds on “Reflected”, the jazz double bass accompanying buzz saw sounds on “Vital”, the somewhat westernish “Season 6”, or the huge, played on thick piano strings, theme on “Cover your Face” are all most delightful and I can fully immerse myself in their sound. On the other hand, the slightly rock’n’rollish “Dior Compound” together with the classically minimal “Leaving” will definitely be dance floor favourites this year. However, I can’t get myself to like neither “Grace”, in which the overmodulated vocals destroy the meticulously weaved marriage of the bass and percussions, nor the disordered arrangements on “For Lack of a Better Solution”. Despite that, the album is brilliant, going far beyond what’s currently being done not only in minimal techno.
It’s difficult to say where Troy Pierce’s musical roots have grown as I find elements of everything from classical music, through jazz, up to techno and electro in his productions. His next album might just well be a milestone in the progress of electronic music provided his talent continues to grow the way it has up till now.
