Smoke is currently one of the most electrifying names on the scene. It took him 4 years to record his first album, “Incommunicado”, whereas this one took no more than a year. The first one was widely praised, with Sound Revolt including it in the Top 5 of the best artist albums of 2005, so how did Alex fare on “Paradolia”?
This album probably won’t follow the big commercial success of its predecessor because of the sound it contains. There are no smash hits like “Chicca Wappa” or “Brian’s Lung”, but then again, there is more to life than dancing and screaming. After the big success of “Incommunicado”, Alex felt he could go deeper into the underground and fulfill his musical vision. A vision which is slightly experimental and quite original. Smoke definitely does not look for praise among a less discerning audience. “Paradolia” is, for the most part, filled with tranquil productions based on minimal, clicky and twisted beats and characteristic synths and strings. Smoke used many styles and inspirations but on the whole managed to remain absolutely cohesive. The biggest attention grabbers on the album are “Never Want To See You Again”, “Anima” (both with Alex on vocals) and “Left Drift” but there’s lots of unique sounds on the album.
If you are into minimal, tech house, ambient and electro melted in with classic instruments, you can’t miss “Paradolia”.
