Despite not having released many records, German DJ and producer Matt John is one of those artists who has been changing the face of music. Matt’s compositions are so exclusive and expressive that one can travel through them like through a three-dimensional movie. All the titles on the “Behind the Atoms” EP refer to the artist's passion for exploring a holographic way of thinking, which is something that has reflected on his continuous experiments with music. The title track is a sort of combination of the future world full of electronics and an old wardrobe in the attic. The fairy-like spectacle of samples of all kinds has been filmed in full motion from different perspectives. Stunning! “Forgive the Lines” is a more dynamic follow-up to “Behind...”.It is decorated with a completely new set of surreal sounds and original work in the percussion layer. “IO” is a track which shows how movie makers used to illustrate science laboratories in the 70’s. It’s the most dancey production - I’d even say slightly big-beatish - on the whole release. However, the minimal yet warm “Hologram”, with its characteristic melody from a musical box (where have I heard this theme before?) and the metallic sound of the kick drum, is the track that brought me the most joy. Troy Pierce’s Underl_ne label, thanks to such releases as “Enemy Love” or “Behind the Atoms”, can quickly become strong and healthy competition for Hawtin’s Minus. Let’s hope that happens.
