Steve Bug is one of the most valued figures on the European minimal house scene. He is the head of the successfully run Poker Flat label, a sought-after DJ and a highly valued and recognized producer. The second release of his own ‘Bugnology’ series, will hit store shelves very soon and, let me mention this right away, it’s going to be a record worth reaching out for.
The album is opened by some minimal clicks and clacks, which are followed by a variety of noises and distortions supplemented by mechanically sounding, yet twisted, melodies. All the technical mish-mash disappears altogether with the phenomenal track “Kosovo”, in which some moll chords played on the guitar background successfully cope with my understanding of good music. After a while, a number of dirty house tunes converge in another little finale at ‘Bounce 2 the Ounce’, then at ‘Arquipelago’, and one more time at ‘Falling Up’. Having mentioned this production, it’s worth to check out the original version to see the magnificent work Carl Craig has done on the remix. I’m not quite happy with the big finale though, as Emilie Chick's vocal on ‘Bag U Should’ stands out from the whole concept of the album. Nevertheless, this computer aided and full of re-edits and varied tracks album can be easily swallowed in one piece, which might be a good enough reason to complement the author.
Steve Bug, this time in the role of a software DJ, has again proven himself to be a highly valued artist. I must admit that he’s made the most of the current abilities of software, which will definitely make you guys happy too.
