Fred Numf - Disorientation / Drifting

Fred Numf is undoubtedly one of the top Dutch electronic music producers, but fortunately he has chosen less commercial way of progress than his backyard fellows: Tiesto and Marco V. He decided to learn from Chris Fortier’s, Anthony Pappa’s and Steve Porter’s work, which can be heard in few parts of the productions being described here.

“Disorientation” is a trancey, quite fast but still progressive track. The title can be understood in two ways, as Numf placed oriental chants on rather less eastern sounds, and that’s what’s dis-orient-ating here. The track is distinguished by amazing breakdown, in which growing alarm siren’s muffled sounds may stand some hair on end for sure. Yes, I really want to hear it in a club.

“Drifting” has the same tempo as “Disorientation” though the style is completely different. The housey beat in the introduction reminds me that I’m listening to Deep Dish’s label release, but with every single phrase and with every single instrument included the track becomes more and more complex. Numf introduces other instruments at leisure and that allows me to smoothly enjoy the perfect track arrangement. And there is a lot to be noticed, as in the background sound laser guns, booms deep and warm bass, and in the foreground comes and goes a short vocal loop. The cosmic atmosphere becomes more serious when Numf introduces massive organ chords in the second part of the track.

The promo we received included a piece of paper with a message “That is quite different, I wonder if you’ll like it”. The answer is: yes, I do like it. But as for the label the release is in a way original, I did not find anything new in it.
