Last year, I reviewed the compilation '1.0' from Heretic, which is a duet formed by Paolo Mojo together with Cass. I also wrote about Desyn Masiello and Chris Fortier's albums for the Balance series and all three of the above mentioned mix CDs received maximum points. Is Paolo Mojo’s work a decent follow up to this admirable run of good releases? No. The first record left me disappointed. The track selection, no matter how you judge it, doesn’t look like the Paolo that I know. Every song – with some exceptions – suits the beaches of Miami better than a CD record. This shameful collection of radio hits is saved by a superb remix of ‘Speechless’ from DJ Three, the old-school ‘Heat You Up’ and ‘Deep Burnt’, the romantic ‘Love the Madness’ and… the brilliant work on the mixing. The second CD is opened by the trivial ’Ruckus’ with its totally mindless prattling on top. There’s even more “decorations” like this on the record, the ‘Moonraker’ acapella, which should have been forgotten a long time ago, or the nasty ‘Good Beat’ just to mention a few. Fortunately, there are some great moments on CD 2 as well. In principle, I have to admit that Mojo starts to play really good as of the ‘Say It’ track, and ‘The Sky was Pink’ with the ‘I’ll be your Friend’ acapella literally makes you feel excited. I expected something more from Paolo Mojo than banal funky house enriched by (only!) a few valuable productions. Perhaps the artist has chosen the right way to gather more attention from a wider audience, but my soul cannot be taken by such music. Bowing down to the magnificent mixing, I remain hopeful for future, musically better compilations.
