Review: Onionz - Burnin | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
New Yorker Andrew Venagas is known from his releases on Elektrik Soul among other labels but this time, he has put out a single on Cr2. At the end of last year, I was eagerly listening to the product of his collaboration with Yousef, “What Is Going On?”. Has “Burnin” aroused similar feelings? Not really. The Original and Dub versions are nothing more than pleasantly rhythmic tech house. I simply don’t get the poor synth line, which makes me feel like I’m constantly in the same moment of the track. The release gets more interesting along with the Gene Farris mix in which latino-like hats go together with an acidy bass, heavy monotonous synths and a warm melody over it. Add vocals from the original and you get a top notch production. Venagas’ work was also improved by Chris Lake, who cut out most of the poor synth line and used an electric bass over a funky rhythm instead. The final mark of the whole package was raised by the aforementioned remixes.
