John Digweed - Transitions

10 years after the famous ‘The Mix Collection’, John Digweed returns on Renaissance with a new series entitled ‘Transitions’. Under this title we’ll see two single CD compilations each year. Digweed neither blew me away with the 20th Fabric nor with the classic collection from Azuli, and the announcement of a new record from him no longer causes as many emotional shivers of awaiting as it used to.

The ‘Transitions’ title, willy-nilly, calls up the ingenuous and not yet surpassed piece from Hawtin done last year. However, Digweed’s album, unlike Hawtin’s, is a presentation of the classic approach to – unfortunately not ideal - mixing.

Enough yelling, as the track selection is almost perfect. Digweed has only ladled a spoon from the newest minimal house vibe and made the sound only the introduction and the conclusion of the album. Its most significant part is opened by ‘Neontrance’, in which the storming bassline together with the pulsing trance loops cause a lot of amazing disorder. As of that moment, the artist places the listener around the modern sound of tech and progressive trance and the record becomes more powerful, more melodic, and more complete. The absolute number one is David K’s production ‘Beautiful Dead’, with its many surprising points in the arrangement. There are also a number of tracks almost as good as the one mentioned, such as ‘Roots 4 Acid’, ‘Knight of Columbus’ and ‘Jetchi’.

For the most part, the record represents a very high musical level, but I have the impression that Digweed “dashed it off” a bit. Besides some really great transitions, there is a number of poor ones, in which the artist didn’t really care about the key of the following tracks, which nowadays seems to be a major mistake. Anyway, it’s definitely worth having in your collection.
