Magda - She's a Dancing Machine

Here’s another next generation DJ mix. This time it’s Magda who decided to give up the traditional approach to building compilations and instead of fighting several vinyl records and the turntables, she set her sights on a laptop to work on 71 different tracks. In principle, this approach is similar to Hawtin’s ‘DE9’ series, but the execution is quite different.

Magda is a great DJ, and a woman, so I was expecting a record full of heart and soul, a real ear grabber with brilliant arrangements, exclusive melodies, and the well-known dynamism from her live sets. Unfortunately, this has not happened. Magda’s compilation is a showcase of a computer craftsman, not an artist-musician. And the fact that she’s technically managed to convert 71 different song fragments into 16 new tracks doesn’t appeal to me, as the new 16 are often average at the very most. Moreover, they are also quite cold. Magda, having forgotten that she’s built her career playing music from the borders of minimal, her own specific brand of music which is warm and melodic, tried to fit the album into the cold and mechanical trend of the Minus label. And it didn’t do her any good, as even at the 10th approach the record still remains tough, even though you constantly listen for something to finally catch on. Despite the promising beginning and the dynamic ending, the album simply makes me tired.

I prefer Magda from the club where on the decks she is a real dancing machine. On this record she’s unfortunately only a machine.
