Faithless - 3D

After Satoshie Tomiie’s album, it’s time for the second instalment of the “3D” series. Except for several productions and the “No Roots” LP, I wasn’t into Faithless’ output. The situation changed last year when I had the chance to experience the band live. I was really impressed by the music and the performance itself and felt what the whole phenomenon of Rollo, Maxi Jazza and Sister Bliss was all about.

According to the series’ idea, each CD represents a different area of the artists’ creative activity. The first disc is quite a cross-sectional yet cohesive demonstration of their studio abilities. You’ll hear some declamation from Maxi Jazz, tranquil songs, trip hop journeys and more or less delicate returns to the times of rave. Except for one blunder in the form of “I Feel Love” the whole CD is a pleasure.

The second act’s goal was to show Faithless’ capability of moving the club and that’s where you’ll find the energy known from their gigs. Even though there are no tracks from the band here, the level of energy is similar. A few slip ups in the repertoire are fully compensated by the brilliant mix of the first two tracks and great productions like “The Game”, “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” or “Breakfast”. The second CD is filled with a summery atmosphere and I’m surely going to spend more than one hot day listening to it.

The same goes to the third dimension, i.e. music targeted for the home environment. However, the solid dose of dub, reggae, hip hop, funk, soul and jazz suits both armchairs and hammocks. There are very old tracks on it like “Woman to Woman” or “Children of The Ghetto”, some recorded 10 years ago like “Next Type of Motion” and a number that are still quite fresh like “The Takeover”. Despite such variety, you can’t hear any dissonance and CD3 stands as a very coherent and rocking whole.
