Underwater is a label that has been on the market for 12 years. It has released 5 artist albums, 4 compilations and a huge amount of singles. “Episode V” – as you can easily guess – is the fifth installment of the imprint’s mixed CDs. They are always two disc compilations with one being recorded by the label owner Darren Emerson. My attention was mainly caught by the name of Magik Johnson, but after listening to the album it was clear that both artists deserve applause.
The compilation is opened by Darren Emerson’s CD – an intense set of party oriented electro, tech and dirty house tracks. The disc is made-to-measure dancefloors during the hottest moments of the night. The most memorable tracks are hits like “A Tribute To Mark Spoon”, “Mars”, “La Discotek”, “Saviours In On Out Tonight” and the more sublime productions such as “Howyadoin”, “Hypnolove” , which is excellently mixed with “For Me”, and “Deer In The Headlights”. All in all, that’s more than half of the tracklisting!
Magik Johnson began his story with a very good funky track from DJ T and with it began a slightly darker plot for the fifth Episode. You can still hear electro and tech house but there’s also some of the good old “unplugged” house. The earcatchers are “Flake Escape”, “Malone”, “Do For Love” and the undeniably number one of the whole release – “Not What You Know”.
This album is made up of two very good CDs with each of them having their strong sides. Darren’s – the energy, track selection and mixing. Magik’s – the atmosphere.
